Grant Featherston came up with the idea to bend and join two pieces of plywood to form the shell of a chair sometime in 1950 while playing with a tram ticket and a year after that, the legendary Featherston Contour Chair was born. Featherston dreamed of making a chair that would be a ‘negative’ of the human body to create the concept of ‘contour comfort.’ Contour Chair was recognised worldwide as a post war breakthrough design. Fresh, contemporary design strikes ideal balance between classic comfort and updated style.

Grant Featherston

Grant Featherston was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1922 and was considered one of Australia’s best known designers. His furniture has win many Good Design Awards. Before serving the army, he was a self-taught Australian designer who worked in lighting and glass panels before specializing in furniture. His works have been featured in numerous museum exhibits and his modernist chairs, which had been featured in prominent Australian galleries such as the Peter Bray Gallery, are highly collectable works. His work has been featured in several museum retrospectives of post-war furniture and his designs still inspire modern designers of today.
